E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute of the NASU 11 Kazymyr Malevych Str., 03150, Kyiv, Ukraine.Abstract
History of participation of the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute scientists in major works in the field of military tank construction is outlined. The role of the Institute in the development of the technology for automatic submerged-arc welding of armoured hulls and turrets of the legendary tank T-34 during the Great Patriotic Was is described. Stages of progress of work done in the field of arc and electron beam welding as well as special metallurgy for production of armoured hulls of medium and light tanks of different modifications in the post-war period are given
Keywords: tank construction, armoured steels, armoured hull manufacturing, military tanks, automatic welding, gas electric welding, fused and agglomerated (ceramic) fluxes, flux-cored wire, electron beam welding, electroslag remelting, reinforced steel
