A brief review and analysis of the results of research of multiphase plasma-sprayed coatings based on metallic and ceramic
powders containing ultrafine components, conducted by the authors, are presented. The influence of introducing nanosized silicon
dioxide (SiO2) in the form of Aerosil on the formation of the microstructure and macrostructure of the coatings, as well as on
the physical and mechanical properties of the substrate-coating system, has been analyzed. A computational and experimental
methodology for assessing the possible initiation and propagation of cracks in coatings is proposed. The methodology includes
evaluation of the energy balance during bending tests, which made it possible to determine fracture toughness parameters associated
with coating delamination and cracking, and to obtain additional information on the strength characteristics of both the
coatings themselves and the composite material as a whole. 14 Ref., 3 Tabl., 2 Fig.
