Abstract
This study examines the technological features of producing intermetallic titanium aluminide alloys, which show promise for use in gas turbine engine components. Particular attention is paid to the use of rare-earth metals, specifically yttrium, as an effective modifying additive in alloy melting. The technological features of producing intermetallic titanium aluminide alloys, intended for use in modern aircraft engine manufacturing, are examined. The results of melting a 195 mm diameter ingot of the Ti–29Al–7Nb–2Mo alloy using the double electron beam remelting method are presented. To achieve an optimal chemical composition and improve performance characteristics, further remelting was carried out in a controlled-atmosphere vacuum arc furnace with the addition of yttrium as a modifying element. The effect of modification on the macro- and microstructure of the alloy, as well as on its mechanical properties, was studied. It was established that the addition of a surface-active element promotes grain structure refinement and increases the material’s strength.
