Abstract
The problem of improving the reliability of oil storage double-wall tanks is considered. It is shown that installing special bands at lower flanges of the main and auxiliary wall does not solve the problem in its full scope. It is suggested that reliability of the main wall should be improved by applying to assessment of rolled plate quality the deformation defect tip displacement criterion Kc which is met by the new generation of steels, i.e. controlled-rolling niobium-containing steels. Substantial improvement of toughness properties of the wall plates will guarantee detection and removal of defects in the main wall in the subcritical condition.
Keywords: welded structures, double-wall tanks, niobiumcontaining steels, cracking resistance, tough fracture, brittleness criteria
