International Association “Welding” (IAW) was founded on June 5, 1991, by the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (PWI), Kyiv, Ukraine, and a number of organizations in the welding industry from Ukraine, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Poland.
From its founding until 2020, Academician Boris Paton, Director of the PWI, served as Chairman of the Association’s Board. Currently, Academician Leonid Lobanov, Deputy Director of the PWI, serves as Chairman of the Association’s Board.
The Director of the International Association “Welding” is Dr. Oleksandr Zelnichenko.

From 1996 to 2015, the International Association “Welding” carried out an international project "The development of equipment and technology for high-frequency electric welding of soft living tissues" involving:
The collaboration was successful*. The development of power supplies took place in stages. The EK-300M1 power supply was developed in 2004, and its upgraded version was developed in 2007–2008 in collaboration with the Research Institute of Applied Electronics at the National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” and the “Lichmash” plant (Lubny, Poltava Region, Ukraine). A total of 200 power supplies were manufactured by International Association “Welding”, which are effectively used in many medical facilities across Ukraine.
