Measures are proposed aimed at improving the ultrasonic method (ultrasonic waves) for determining residual welding stresses (RWS), which are based on the condition of ‘equilibrium’ between the compression and tension diagrams of RWS. This, unlike the traditional application of the US wave method, allows the latter to be used to determine tensile RSW in the plastic deformation zone. The conditions for implementing the method have been developed, taking into account the peculiarities of the stress-strain state of welded joints of low-alloy and low-carbon steels, which can be used for rapid determination of RWS in full-scale structures. The improved method has been tested in determining the σx component of RWS along a weld in a sample of a butt joint made of low-carbon steel 09G2S with a thickness of 12 mm. Verification of σx distribution results obtained by the ultrasonic wave method was carried out using electronic speckle interferometry (ESPI). The satisfactory reliability of the obtained values of tensile strength in the weld zone of the test sample welded joints was established. The results obtained can be used in the development of an express method for determining RWS in full-scale welded structures during their manufacture and operation. 11 Ref., 4 Fig.
